A Brief History of Sunnylea Lodge

On Sunday June 12th 1949 a number of Masonic brethren met at the home of W. Bro. Stu Brown for the purpose of discussing the formation of a local lodge. The minutes of the meeting record that Bro. Ernie Martyn was elected chairman for the preliminary meeting. That the proposed lodge be named "The Sunnylea Lodge". That W. Bro. Bert Foote be the first Master. Bert was a Past Master of Patricia Lodge. The fourth meeting on October 14th 1949 held at the Old Mill resulted in the completion of the first slate of officers and the committees necessary to conduct the operations of the lodge once dispensation was granted by Grand Lodge. 

The culmination of many months of labour was reached on Friday March 10th 1950 when the lodge was duly instituted. R.W. Bro Percy F. Egerton DDGM of Toronto District A officiated and was ably assisted by such eminent masons as V.W. Bro. LeMaitie and R.W. Bro. Donald Gunn. The reading of 10 petitions for memberships highlighted the first regular meeting held on Friday March 24th 1950.

First Officers - 1950

The second regular meeting on Friday February 28th 1950 saw the initiation of Sunnylea's first candidate Mr. Carl Sturdy Chadwick. It was at this meeting the W. Bro. Soutar W.M. of Patricia Lodge #587 GRC and his officers together with V.W. Bro. M. Smeall honoured one of their own Past Masters int the person of W. Bro. Bert Foote, first Master of Sunnylea Lodge by making several presentation of equipment to our lodge. 

Friday September 29th 1950 was the climax to the labours of our brethren. The Constitution and Consecration of the Sunnylea Lodge AF&AM #664 GRC became an accomplished fact.

The installation and investiture of our W.M. and officers took place at an emergent meeting held Friday October 20th 1950. R.W. Bro. Harold Taylor DDGM of Toronto District A was the Installing Master.

At the regular meeting on Friday December 8th 1950 on a motion by W. Bro. W.H.S. Robertson and seconded by W. Bro. E.L. Mitchell, the first master senior, and junior warden received life memberships that is W. Bro. Bert Foote, W. Bro. Stu Brown and Bro. Ernie Martyn.

The first serious loss sustained by our lodge occurred on January 30th 1952 when Bro. E.M. Martyn our Secretary passed to the Grand Lodge above. Rememberence is a Golden Chain.

In 1954, W. Bro. Lloyd Tomlinson laid the groundwork for what was to become and continues today a very happy relationship with Christopher G. Fox Lodge #1021 Grand Lodge of New York.

The first initiate to be installed as W. Master of the lodge was W. Bro. George Chapman. The ceremony took place January 28th 1955.

In July 1954, our lodge was honoured by the appointment of W. Bro. Charles W. Hagyard as a Grand Steward. This was the first of several honours extended to Sunnylea Lodge. Since then many members of Sunnylea were appointed to the Grand Lodge.

1991 - W. Bro. John Green - Grand Steward

1994 - W. Bro. David Sheen - DDGM

2000 - W. Bro. John Furlong - Grand Piper

2001 - W. Bro. Arthur Berry - Grand Pursuivant
